11 Hacks To Save You Money Around The Home

(All posts may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy)

Here are 11 of the best hacks to save you money around the home:

1. Make a budget

Budgets are the best way to visibly see how much money you have, and how much money you can spend weekly or monthly without having to worry. It can also show you what you’re spending your cash on, which is great for sorting out the priorities and putting them at the top, while removing anything that isn’t needed.

2. Collect spare change

Keep a jar on your bedside table, and whenever you have loose change in your pockets, empty it into the jar. Keep doing this for the next couple of weeks and when you hit your first month mark, have a count and see how much you have managed to save so far.

3. Shop at the dollar store

Dollar stores are awesome, and shouldn’t be something to be embarrassed about. Why pay an extra $7 for wrapping paper or soap when you can get it for a dollar?

4. Rent a dress

Yes, you read that correctly. If you have an important event or occasion that is coming up and you need a super fancy dress to wear, but you just can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars – rent one instead. There are stores that do this, or you can just keep the tag on, make sure you don’t stain it, and then take it back the next day!

5. Pay your bills online

Not only is it a lot more efficient because of the email reminders and the simplicity of paying online, but you will be saving the use of stamps and checks being sent out. Plus, going paperless is so much better for the environment.

6. Plan your shops wisely

Get the cheapest prices by purchasing items after the season is over, for example, buy holiday decorations after Christmas, get furniture at the start of the year and buy a barbecue in the fall. And make sure you stay up to date with the latest offers and clearances.

7. Close closet doors

Keep your energy costs down by making sure you close all the closet doors, that way you aren’t needlessly using up the heat to fill a closet space. The same goes for any rooms that don’t need to be heated – close the doors.

8. Go on a DIY rampage

You can’t do everything, like water removal in a flooded basement or repairing your boiler system, and sometimes it’s important to admit that to yourself before you make things worse. But, anything that you can learn through various YouTube videos – take advantage of it and fix that squeaky door or the jammed cupboard.

9. Stock up on cheap gifts

When things are on sale, make the most of it and stock up on gifts for the year, this can be for birthdays, housewarmings, weddings, and so on.

10. Grow your food

Instead of going out and buying your fruit, veg and herbs – invest in the seeds and plant your own around the garden. It’s really simple to do once you get the hang of it, and you’ll be able to live a sustainable life off your little productive garden. You could even make your own jam and then sell it!

11. Hire a maid service

If you are strapped for time during the week and cleaning your house is too big of an ordeal, it may be worth it to set aside extra funds during the month to hire a maid service like Dallas maid service. This will not only be a time-saver, but you will also be thankful to have a clean home when you get home from a long day of work!

Save Money and Time on Spring Cleaning Essentials! #EverydaySaves

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Lysol®, Finish®, Woolite®, and Air Wick®. The opinions and text are all mine.

Thanks to new Target Cartwheel coupons and promotional offers, we can score all the items that we need to make spring-cleaning a huge success in our home! Lysol, Woolite, Air Wick, and Finish products are your must-haves for spring-cleaning and they will help you refresh and revitalize your home room by room.

When I think of spring-cleaning, laundry definitely comes to mind. My son Drew, who is in flag football this year, requires lots of clean laundry particularly with his dark colored football shorts. Thankfully, I found Woolite High Efficiency Extra Dark Dual Formula at Target to keep his shorts looking and smelling their best! April 2-29 you can save an extra 5% off any Woolite item with the Target Cartwheel offer found HERE. And, save even more! Through April 8, when you purchase 2 Woolite 100oz., you will receive a $5 Target gift card!

When it comes to the kitchen, Finish Jet-Dry Additives help my dishes to look their best. Here’s a fun tip! Did you know that if you use rinse aid in your dishwasher you won’t need to dry your plastics when you put them away?

What about the bathroom? As a mom of boys, I am always on the lookout for ways  to keep the toilet fresh smelling and clean. Lysol products are always at the top of my list, and the Lysol Click Gel is my new best friend! Score hands-free toilet bowl cleaning with an automatic cleaning gel that cleans with every flush! With the Air Wick Scented Oil Warmers, I can adjust the fragrance level however I need based on the room. And, with 8x more fragrance control, it’s perfect for any size room! The Air Wick PURE Freshmatic is also another great option for fast acting fragrance.

DIY Fire-Breathing Dragon Craft Inspired by My Knight and Me on Cartoon Network

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by the Cartoon Network Series, My Knight and Me. All opinions are 100% my own. Please see my disclosure policy)

Have your kiddos seen the adventure-packed new animated series for kids on Cartoon Network called My Knight and Me? The epic show airs weekdays at 12pm (ET/PT) on Cartoon Network and my son Brady is enamored with it!

My Knight and Me, for kids ages 6-10, follows the quests of a colorful and charismatic trio of knights in shining armor: loyal, street-smart Jimmy the Squire; daring and determined Cat the Princess; and bold and courageous Henri of Orange, Jimmy’s dad and a charmingly inept, yet passionately chivalrous knight who might not be the most efficient protector of the realm – but sure is the funniest! Together, the knightly group sets out from the Kingdom of Epic to save the day and brighten the Dark Ages!

The series models close family ties (Jimmy thinks his dad is the best!), emphasizes the importance of teamwork (together, Jimmy, Cat and Henri can overcome any challenge  that comes their way!) and underscores the importance of using strategy over might to solve problems (Jimmy is the man with a plan!). My Knight and Me also features clever anachronisms (like Smart-Mirrors that resemble today’s iPhones, set in the Middle Ages), which add to the uniqueness of the show.

I was super excited to have the opportunity to create a DIY craft inspired by the show! My son Brady, who loves to help me with crafts, immediately knew that he wanted to make a Fire-Breathing Dragon. One of the characters on My Knight and Me is a dragon named Bad Jack. He is Epic’s most fearsome dragon and a frequent antagonist of Jimmy, Cat, and Henri. He spends more time seeking treasure and tormenting the people of Epic. Brady loves dragons so we thought that a dragon-inspired craft would be so much fun!

Materials Needed:

Red and yellow streamers

Medium sized green pom poms

Mini sized poms poms in color of your choice

Green and red glitter glue

Googly eyes

Empty paper towel roll

Glue (a glue gun would work great as well)

Tape

Scissors

Green pipe cleaner stems

Small cups

Green construction paper

Crayons (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut green construction paper to fit around the empty paper towel holder and glue it on.

2. Take one of the small cups and cut a hole in the center. Make the hole big enough for the empty paper towel holder to go through. You will use this later on.

3. Take the glitter glue and cover the outside of the cup. You can use whatever colors that you prefer, but we used green and red.

4. While the glue is still wet, place the green pom poms and googly eyes on the front.

5. Place two mini pom poms on the cup for the dragon nose.

6. Let the glue dry.

7. While the glue on the cup “face” is drying, cut the red and yellow streamers into strips of “flames”.

8. Cut out 3 strips of “wings” for the dragon with a grass like criss-cross pattern. Glue the wings down the center of the covered paper towel holder.

9. Take the green pipe cleaner and glue a strip down the center of the wings.

10. Place the covered paper towel holder in the hole of the cup. It should fit snug and not loosely.

11. Attach the “flames” on the front of the cup with glue or tape.

12. Finally, make a “tail” for the dragon with several pieces of the pipe cleaners. Twist them together and make your “tail”. Place the pipe-cleaners through the end of the covered paper towel holder. I taped these down on the inside so that they would stick.

13. Voila! You have a fire-breathing dragon! Brady loved blowing through the “tail” of the dragon to make the flames move!

Amazon’s award-winning Creative Galaxy is a create-along art adventure series for preschool children. Animated by 9 Story Entertainment, the series follows Arty, an adorable alien artist, and Epiphany, his inspirational side-kick, on their adventures through the Creative Galaxy as they solve problems through art. To give kids and parents the real-life tools they need to recreate Arty’s experience, a live-action piece at the end of each animated episode takes families through the craft project Arty showcased in the galaxy. In 2015, Creative Galaxy received the Parents’ Choice Gold Award for Television (ages 3-5)

In “Heart Day,” Epiphany (Kira Gelineau, Dear Viola) is ready to show her love with a special performance on Groovopolis, but she accidently ruins her costume before the show! She and Arty (Meesha Contreras) fly into the Creative Galaxy for a solution and together they help all his friends along the way learn that everyone has their own special way of saying “I heart you!” Samantha Bee (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) and Jason Jones (The Daily Show) guest star as Arty’s parents, and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb lends her voice as Melody.

Creative Galaxy fans will be so excited to know that Arty’s Tool Belt is now available for purchase! For the first time, young fans of the series can create their own masterpieces, just like Arty, with this colorful new activity set that includes an adjustable tool belt, pads for coloring, doodling and painting with water, sticker book, crayons and paintbrushes. Strawberry Pound Cake Kabobs With Chocolate Drizzle #SundaySupper #FLStrawberry

This post is sponsored by Florida Strawberry in conjunction with a social media campaign through Sunday Supper LLC. All opinions are my own.

I don’t know about you, but as soon as Florida strawberry season is here, I can’t help but do a little strawberry dance! These red gems of juicy goodness are the perfect portable bite and they can be eaten anytime anyplace. Just wash and eat!

You may not know this, but Florida strawberries are actually harvested in the winter.  Yep, it is true! These beauties are available from November through April so we can enjoy them regardless of the weather outside!

If you don’t see Florida strawberries carried at your local grocery store, be sure to ask your produce or store manager. You will be glad you did. There is nothing like a Florida strawberry!

Not only are Florida strawberries delicious, they are also packed full of nutritional benefits. Strawberries are virtually fat free, have no cholesterol, and did you know that just 8 medium strawberries contain more Vitamin C than one orange? Click here for more nutritional info.

When I bought my first pound of Florida strawberries this year I was torn what to do with them. They were so sweet! I made a few smoothies, dipped some in chocolate and of course just ate them by themselves! I knew that I wanted to create an extra special treat with these beauties so I decided to make Strawberry Pound Cake Kabobs With Chocolate Drizzle. This is such a fun and easy recipe and a great use of strawberries! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner these would be the perfect nutrient-packed treat that anyone is sure to love!

Strawberry Pound Kabobs With Chocolate Drizzle

Ingredients:

Pound cake cut into small cubes. I made my own, but you can use store bought as well.

Florida Strawberries washed and cut into half-sized pieces

Melting chocolates

Kabob or skewer sticks

Directions:

Place a piece of strawberry on a skewer, then a cube of pound cake. Alternate back and forth until you have done this several times per each skewer.

Melt your favorite chocolate in the microwave and drizzle over the finished skewers.

Serve and enjoy! You won’t be able to eat just one! The juice from the Florida strawberries mixed with the pound cake and chocolate is oh-so amazing!

Additionally, you can enter the #FLStrawberryCapContest for your own Strawberry Cap and you could win a Florida getaway with your family at the gorgeous Trade Winds Islands Resorts on St. Pete Beach! How much fun would that be? You can see all of the details to the contest HERE.

Need more Florida winter strawberry inspiration? Visit Strawberry Sue or follow Strawberry Sue on You Tube or Twitter. Florida Strawberry can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google +and Pinterest.
