Small rooms can be a pain to decorate. One wrong move and you can make it look much smaller than it already does – not what you want! Use the following top decor tips to make the most of your small rooms:
Stick to a Lighter Colour Scheme – A lighter colour scheme can help to open up a room and make it appear larger, rather than covering it in a dark colour and closing the space up. You’re not limited to light colours though, as long as you use other colours correctly. Your small room definitely doesn’t need to be boring!
Cover the Place in One Colour– Pick any colour, even a dark one. Now cover the room in it. We’re talking cabinets, walls, ceilings, even the borders. You want to eliminate traces of nearly every other colour. This will erase the borders of the room and make it look so much bigger. Can’t see it working? Take a look at pictures online and you’ll see what we mean.
Keep Things Simple and Clean – Keeping things simple and clean rather than going for a more complicated design is another way to make the room appear bigger. Again, you’re not limited. You can go for something a little fussier as long as you do it right, it’s just harder to achieve!
De-clutter– Get rid of clutter as much as possible to make the room clearer and more concise. If you’re a bit of a hoarder, get a friend in to help you. Be vigilant and sort your rooms out – don’t let them turn into dust bins!
Let in Lots of Light– Letting in as much light as possible will open up the room and create the optional illusion of there being more space. Open up the curtains, and change the window treatments if you need to. You can also add more task lighting, found in online lighting stores. A well lit room will always look bigger.
Mirror the Walls – This trick can help you to double the size of the room. Cover a big wall in mirrors. They can be different styles and sizes, or you can transform the wall into one giant mirror. Whatever you choose to do, the room will look huge! You’ll also create a kind of feature wall that will make an impact on all who enter the room.
Use the Same Pattern All Over – This might sound horrendous, but it really works. Professional designers use this trick all the time. Pick your favourite pattern; polka dot, floral, animal print…whatever. Now use it on the curtains, on your furniture, on the linen and anything else you can find. It adds the wow factor to a room and make it look much bigger!
Try these decor tips and you’ll be amazed at how much bigger your small rooms can appear. It’s all in the mind of course, but it could eliminate the need for a home extension! Any tips that you love? Please feel free to let us know. Come back soon!
